Selecting the Right Kitchen Knife

You can buy a kitchen knife from an upscale kitchen store, a departmental store or even a discount shop. While you are shopping for kitchen knives, it is important that you look for high quality products that will hardly need to be sharpened.

There are two types of kitchen knives. Forged knife is the one whose blade is made by pressing the hot steel into a mold. Then the blade is either hammered out or run through machines to give it a specific shape. These knives are expensive because they have a better balance.

Stamped knife are made by cutting the blade from a single steel sheet. Then the blade is further finished and sharpened. This blade is thinner than forged type and can be a little unbalanced.

Every kitchen should have different styles of knife block set. Every set has different types of knives. One of the most common is a boning knife, which is used for cutting bone. The narrow blade of the knife will make it easier to cut the meat from the bones.

Chef’s knife is another must in your kitchen because it is used in many techniques. The knife is available in different lengths. You can dice, mince, chop or slice with the chef’s knife.

Another knife you can have in knife block is a cleaver. If you have to frequently cut thick items, cleaver is the best. It looks like an axe with thick blade and the length could be around 6 inches.

Utility knives can do anything. These knives have four to seven inches blade that is good for cutting vegetables, herbs, fruit and garlic. A utility knife with serrated edge is also available in market.

A paring knife is the smallest knife used to cut things like small vegetables, remove potato skin and other small tasks. The blades of this knife are slender and less than 4 inch long.

All these knives are necessity in kitchen and you should always remember, the expensive they are better they will work.
